Holmium Laser Prostate Surgery
What is Holmium Laser Prostate Surgery?
Large prostate glands that are not cancerous (prostatomegaly) can block the outflow of urine from the bladder. In order to reduce the bulk of the gland a holium laser probe is passed through the penis (urethra) up to the gland and used to burn away the excess tissue. This can be achieved with minimum blood loss, but pieces of the prostate may escape into the bladder, and must be removed by a cystoscope to prevent them blocking the urethra at a later time.
